Many of us dream of doing it but one Welsh couple actually took steps to trade in wet winters in Wales for a holiday home abroad in sunny Spain – only for their plans to fall at the final hurdle. Julie and David have been together for 36 years and as she is due to join her husband in retirement they decided to swap wet Welsh winters for much sunnier climes.

The pair appeared on Channel 4’s property programme Sun, Sea and Selling Houses in their search for a property in Alicante. The show follows people as they attempt to buy a holiday home abroad.

Estate agents and mother and daughter duo Charlotte and Linda showed the Welsh couple three properties on the Algarve. Their wish list for their holiday home was a bungalow-style home with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a swimming pool for their grandchildren with a budget of 115,000 euros.

The couple often holiday in the caravan on the Welsh coast but David said that the wind and rain is “awful”. Wife Julie has rheumatoid arthritis and said: “The damp weather doesn’t agree with me so we would like to base ouirselves here (Alicante) for winter.”

They planned to spend their summer in their caravan and spend their winters at their new holiday home in the sun. Dave said: “If we don’t do it now it’ll be too late.”

The first property the couple were shown was a two bedroom bungalow in Benimar just a 15-minute drive to the coast. The property had plenty of outside space with a self-contained third bedroom and a communal pool that rang in under budget at 114,500 euros. Whilst the property gave Julie “butterflies” Dave felt that the bedroom was too small.

The second property was a two-storey three bedroom townhouse in Daya Vieja in Alicante. The master bedroom had access to an outdoor terrace and also had a communal pool for their grandchildren to enjoy. They both had “butterflies” at the property and said it was “superb” with the only downside being it wasn#t closer to the sea. The property was on the market for 110,000 euros.

The third property was a bungalow in La Marina just a five-minute drive to the beach. The three double bedroom property had plenty of outdoor space and a communal pool and was on offer for 115,000 euros.

Welsh pair Julie and Dave put an offer in on property number two for 100,000 euros which was accepted and the pair were beaming, they said: “A new chapter can finally begin.” But that dream was short lived when the sale of the house fell through with no prospect of another property on the horizon it looks like the pair will still be enjoying the Welsh weather for a little while longer.
