The £100m home that will be the largest to be built in the UK in 100 years and is inspired by the mansion in The Great Gatsby

The largest home built in Britain in the last 100 years is set to be constructed in the small countryside village of Ramsden in Cotswolds, Oxfordshire. The grand estate, called St John’s House, will be built on a 60-acre space on private parkland, and is expected to be worth over £100 million once complete.

Just the land upon which the house will be built is going for the price of £20 million and is being sold through Sotheby’s International Realty. According to fashion and lifestyle magazine Tatler, the inspiration of the house’s design comes from the mansion in F Scott Fitzgerald’s 1924 novel The Great Gatsby.

Those who haven’t read the novel might be familiar with the 2013 movie by the same name that starred Hollywood legend Leonardo DiCaprio and Spiderman actor Tobey Maguire. As in the book, the mansion, owned by fictional character Jay Gatsby, is used to host the most outrageously extravagant and over-indulged star-studded parties.

Now, after around 24 years of planning and design by Prince Charles’ favourite architect Professor Robert Adam, what author Fitzgerald envisioned a century ago could be about to become a reality.

The home is designed to host guests and large events

The 68,000 sq.ft home will face southwest, looking out at an amazing 30-mile view of Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and will be neighboured by the Cornbury Estate, Blenheim Palace, and the Glympton Estate. Together, these estates form what is known as the ‘Golden Triangle’.

With a reception hall, a built-in bar, ballroom and a kitchen especially designed to host large events, St John’s House is reminiscent of the gigantic mansions that were once being built on Long Island in the 1920s for the mega rich bankers and investors of Wall Street. It will also have an indoor and outdoor pool, spa, sauna, steam room, gym, tennis court and bowling alley, as well as a private cinema, music room and games room.

The entire top floor of the property is a master bedroom suite, while the first floor boasts of nine more bedrooms, all with their own en-suites.

Another great thing about the house is that it will have additional guest accommodation facilities within its grounds, including two gate houses and guest lodge. The additional spaces included, the home’s actual size goes up to 74,000 sq ft.

To add, the house comes with its own private museum, which can be used as an art gallery, or to display up to 50 cars, sculptures and artefacts.

The home offers unmatched views from Cotswolds to the Chiltern Hills

As if that’s not enough, it will even have a roof garden and its own helicopter landing pad, which will come in handy with Oxford International Airport just five minutes away and RAF Brize Norton only three minutes away. In just 20 minutes, one could even fly their helicopter to the Battersea Heliport in London.

Charles Elsmore-Wickens, a property agent at Savills, said: “This really is an outstanding opportunity for someone to build the house of their dreams. Some things in life are rare but this really is unique!”
