With the Christmas holidays approaching and a new year beginning, people might be wondering which traditional New Year festivities are going ahead in some of the UK’s major cities amid increasing Covid-19 restrictions.

Although it is unclear how restrictions may change over the coming weeks, this year is looking more promising than the isolated celebrations everyone endured this time last year.

That being said, it is important to check the website for the event you want to attend to see what restrictions they currently have in place, which could include the compulsory wearing of face masks, or even Covid Passes.

Nonetheless, here’s what we know so far about key events taking place in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

London

The famous riverside fireworks display which usually takes place by the London Eye every year has been cancelled for a second year in a row due to uncertainties surrounding Covid-19.

The hit event, which usually sees 100,000 people congregate by the river, has been cancelled by Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Instead, a smaller celebration in Trafalger Square is being pulled together with details arriving in due course.

The Mayor said: “Due to the uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, our world-famous New Year’s Eve display will not be held on the banks of the Thames this year.”

He added: “Last year’s successful show took place in a slightly different way due to the pandemic, and this year a number of exciting new options are being considered as part of our New Year’s Eve celebrations in London.”

People will be able to apply to the new event in due course through a lottery or ballot system, with details on how to apply coming over the next few weeks.

That being said, nightclubs and bars currently have been given the go-ahead, meaning you can book tickets to an array of organised events to mark the end of 2021.
