Birch, Hertfordshire

Though the centre of London is awash with members’ clubs, the outskirts of the capital were somewhat lacking in the same type of experience. That is until Birch, a hybrid hotel, restaurant, creative-workshop venue, coworking space and just about anything else you can think of, made its debut.

It’s the kind of place where a day begins with a spin class, continues with a flower-arranging course, meanders into a pottery-making class and draws to an end with a sundowner beside an open fire-pit before heading into a wood-panelled dining room for inventive dishes. In short, the world, or at least the one created for you by Birch, is your oyster.

Visitors can explore medical history through innovative exhibitions, social events, talks and refreshingly fun workshops. Though the museum itself opened in 1997, its latest exhibition, The Unfurlings: Banners for Hope and Change, is brand new, and a project that aims to campaign for a better understanding and representation of people living with dementia. The display showcases 16 large banners made by people with dementia and their carers, drawing on the tradition of political banners highlighting inequalities.
