A Wiltshire man has appealed to the police and a housing association for help after being forced out of his home because of fears over his safety.

Shane Powell claims past associates are threatening and intimidating him and have stolen items from his property.

He has now moved out for his own safety and is living at a new address while asking the Devizes-based Aster housing association to re-home him.

Mr Powell, 34, of Oatfields, Staverton, said: “I have lived here for six years but I can’t stay here any longer. I just don’t feel safe.

“I just feel very threatened by people I have known in the past. I have contacted the police and my local MP and have asked Aster to rehouse me.”

Mr Powell suffers from the final stage of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a group of inherited muscle-wasting conditions that damage the peripheral nerves.

He also suffers from asthma, epilepsy and fibromyalgia and is registered disabled.

Mr Powell lives in a one-bedroomed flat where he has installed security cameras because of past incidents.

He claims he suffered a suspected heart attack because of the stress from which he is suffering and added: “I just don’t know what to do any more. I just feel suicidal.”

Mr Powell says a burglar broke into his flat in 2018 after his father Michael Powell had died from cancer aged 64 and stole sentimental items.

He claims the property has since been raided twice by past associates he once regarded as friends and with whom he fell out. He claims they have stolen items worth more than £1,000 from him.

He said: “These people keep coming back. I have told the police about them and have given them names.”

“I last lived at the property two weeks ago. I have been forced to leave my home because I just don’t feel safe. All I want to do is to live my life happily.”

Mr Powell is now living in a safe place with another family member.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “We can confirm we have received three reports in June relating to ongoing issues at a property in Oatfields, Staverton. These have included threats being made and items stolen from a front garden.

“Officers have made contact with the victim on a number of occasions and, as well as carrying out enquiries, have provided safeguarding support, including contact with Horizon, our victim and witness care service. At this stage our investigation is currently ongoing.”

An Aster Group spokeswoman said: “We take all incidents of anti-social behaviour very seriously and we’re supporting the police with their investigations into Mr Powell’s case.

“A member of our anti-social behaviour team has been in touch with Mr Powell and we have provided additional security measures to help him feel as safe as possible.

“We understand Mr Powell’s distress at these events, and we are doing all we can to support him.”
