Tower Hamlets has today launched its new Intermediate Housing Register to help people on low to average incomes find a secure home and help tackle the housing waiting list.
Residents on the register will get the first chance to express interest in any new London Living Rent, Shared Ownership and other intermediate housing schemes built in the borough.
For the first three months homes are listed, only local people and those who have worked in the borough for at least six months who are registered will get details of the properties. After that, if Tower Hamlets residents have not bought or rented the homes, they will be opened up to the general public.
There are currently 21,249 households on the council’s housing waiting list, which far outstrips supply. This figure is the third highest waiting list in London after Newham and Lambeth.
The new Intermediate Housing Register aims to assist low to average income households currently on the housing waiting list, as well as other residents of Tower Hamlets and those working in the borough, to find suitable housing option.
John Biggs, Mayor of Tower Hamlets, said:
“I’m committed to providing more social and affordable homes for Tower Hamlets residents. We have 9,000 households on our housing register who are on low incomes but not in statutory housing need and who are therefore unlikely to gain a social tenancy. The launch of the Intermediate Housing Register is going to give these people more options to find secure, affordable housing.”
Cllr Danny Hassell, Cabinet Member for Housing, said:
“There are many people on our housing register who regrettably have no prospect of securing a council home but have difficulty accessing the housing market. This particularly affects many of our young residents within Tower Hamlets who do not have the opportunity to get on to the property ladder.
“The Intermediate Housing Register will allow a large proportion of these residents to find suitable homes and continue to provide more realistic housing options to those who need it.”
