HOUGHTON — Two people were injured in a Sunday explosion and structure fire, the Houghton Police Department said.

At 1:27 a.m. Sunday, police were dispatched to 908 College Ave. in Houghton on a report of an explosion and structure fire, according to a news release. The Houghton Fire Department was called to the scene to assist with the fire.

Police said six people were evacuated from the residence, and all residents were accounted for, with two people transported to UP Health System – Portage for minor injuries.

SEMCO Energy Gas Company was called to the scene to assist, and surrounding homes were evacuated for safety, police said. Gas lines also were shut off until further investigations are completed and the area is made safe.

The Houghton Fire Department was assisted by surrounding fire departments, Michigan Tech Public Safety and the Hancock Police Department. Pigs-N-Heat was available at the scene to help with emergency needs, police said, and the Salvation Army and Red Cross will continue to provide assistance.
