Property perusing, scrolling one’s way through estate agency websites – whether in fantasy mode or on a genuine quest – is a very Wallpaper* way to pass a Sunday brunch time or extended train journey. With each explored house or photo-toured duplex apartment, mental mood boards begin to form, new lifestyles are imagined, furniture pieces and artworks put in place. Kitchen dinner parties are planned, rooms remodelled and rearranged. Sometimes a wall might be knocked through. How far from the new house to the London office? And when WFH, will the new study be big enough for that Gio Ponti desk and the new Vitsoe shelving unit? As home inspiration for your next perusing session, we’ve partnered with agents Savills, founded in the UK in 1855, now with 600 offices worldwide, to curate a selection of recently listed, under offer and sold properties from its UK portfolio. Five UK houses for home inspiration

Chadwell Mews, London EC1

Chadwell Mews is a collection of seven, handsomely constructed townhouses discreetly tucked away in a quiet gated mews off Chadwell Street, Islington. Thoughtfully designed for modern living, with spectacular light and volume, these new and exclusive residences offer unparalleled levels of interior design and meticulous attention to detail.

Designed by architects Tasou Associates and finished to the finest specifications and styling details throughout, the houses feature light and airy ground floors with triple-aspect glazing that opens onto a peaceful courtyard garden. Within easy reach of lively Clerkenwell, Angel, Exmouth Market, Farringdon, Upper Street and King’s Cross, the discreet mews location in this prized conservation area is an urban sanctuary.

Valentine Row, London SE1

Upon entering this beautiful, modern 1,900 sq ft three-bedroom house in Southwark, London, an impressive hallway, featuring double doors, leads to an open-plan kitchen/dining area with access to a private courtyard garden. The kitchen provides top-of-the-range integrated Siemens appliances and a breakfast bar area. To the front of the house, an additional reception room could accommodate a fourth bedroom. Designed and finished to high specification throughout, the house has underfloor heating, Siemens appliances, hardwood flooring, and soft-close Italian joinery.

On the first floor, an expansive reception room with a private balcony overlooks the landscaped gardens. The principal bedroom, located on the top floor with two balconies, features a stylish dressing area and access to an ensuite bathroom featuring a Roca bathtub and walk-in, waterfall shower.

The Church, Blackmore End, Essex

This beautifully converted Victorian church stands in a lovely stretch of open countryside in the village of Blackmore End. Originally commissioned by the local Courtauld family as a place of worship, it was first converted in 2014 for expansive 21st-century living. Now fully reimagined to create flexible spaces, the property features five bedrooms over three floors.  A fantastic principal living room with ceiling heights extending into the roof, presents beautiful exposed timbers cemented by intricate exposed red bricks. Large feature windows bathe the property in natural light.

The reception hall is approached through a heavy solid oak door onto a slate-finished floor.  A bespoke staircase leads to a minstrel gallery. At the centre of the ground floor is a beautifully designed kitchen/dining room with an extensive range of modern units anchored around a substantial island with breakfast bar. This area is open to the principal living space, which includes a log burner and is overlooked by first- and second-floor galleried landings, linked by an exposed feature staircase. A spectacular glass wall within the principal living area separates the home office, which has a door to the exterior.

On the first floor there are three individual bedrooms, two currently used as fitted dressing rooms with bespoke furniture, a laundry room and a sumptuously appointed bathroom. The second floor is given over to the principal bedroom suite which features a galleried landing overlooking the main living space, a large dual-aspect bedroom and ensuite bathroom with fitted dressing area.

Outside, lime trees line the driveway, which leads to a substantial parking area. Beyond are extensive lawns and a sunken paved terrace, south-facing and ideal for alfresco dining. The lawns continue at the side of the house, where a detached, air-conditioned garden cabin and the air-source heat units for the house are located. The gardens are designed for low maintenance and have an irrigation system and lighting that provides evening ambience.

Elton Road, Stibbington, Cambridgeshire

With glorious, westerly views over the Nene Valley, this well-appointed new-build in Cambridgeshire was constructed in 2017, with a highly energy-efficient design and an eye for detail. Centrally positioned within gardens of just over half an acre, the house offers spacious interiors. There’s a huge open-plan kitchen at its core, and five double bedrooms, four with en suite bathrooms and two with access to a large roof terrace that provides evening sunset views over the valley. A sixth bedroom is currently used as a home office.

The house’s construction focus was on energy efficiency and minimal onward maintenance. The property is made from an insulated concrete block construction, with a pre-coloured K-Rend finish (designed to last for 30 years, according to the manufacturer).

Aluminium double-glazed windows and bi-fold doors frame views. There’s a central vacuum system within the house (which negates the use of a conventional, plug-in vacuum cleaner) and a fully zoned air-source heat pump system, which delivers toasty under-floor heating on the ground floor. The kitchen is warmed by a contemporary wood burner.

Barnes Avenue, London SW3

Incorporating lateral ground-floor accommodation and five, well-proportioned bedroom spaces, this modern, detached home has been designed with light and contemporary urban living in mind. There are two entrances from the front garden and two stylish staircases leading up to the first floor, as well as two reception rooms, a large kitchen/dining room, a utility room with Miele appliances and a cloakroom.

The main entrance hall has an impressive double-height atrium window flooding both the ground and first floor with natural light, while many of the rooms boast high, vaulted ceilings that give the house a wonderfully spacious feel. The main reception room is a stylish, formal room that is perfect for entertaining and features Crittal window panelling and doors. The high-spec, German-designed kitchen has been fitted around the impressive central island and features extensive storage, and appliances including a coffee machine, steam oven, double oven and large American fridge/freezer. There are several doors opening onto the landscaped courtyard garden, which flows seamlessly out to the outside living space, with a large seating area, raised flower beds and lighting.

The house’s ground floor benefits from Lutron lighting and polished concrete flooring, while there is underfloor heating throughout the property. There is a discreet parking area behind the electric gates and the property features zinc roofing and cedar cladding.
