House prices are continuing to soar as the property market shows no signs of slowing down post stamp duty. Thousands of Brits are being priced out by the property market with no other option but to pay extortionate amounts on rent. New data has revealed the cheapest and most expensive places to rent in the UK – but where does your region rank on the list?

Where is the most expensive place to rent in the UK?

The cost of private renting in the UK rose by 1.2 percent between May 2020 and May 2021.

New data released by the Office of National Statistics has revealed the most expensive places to rent in the UK.

The average monthly rental costs were ranked by region, with Greater London coming out on top with an average rent of £1,583.

Renting in the South East came in close second, costing an average of £1,095 per month.

How the rental market has changed in the UK

In the first few months of 2020, it was cheaper to buy than rent in every region of the UK.

From May 2021, this changed – making it cheaper to rent in seven out of the 11 regions in the UK.

Moving from London to surrounding regions was prominent in lockdown with Brits flocking to the South East (Brighton and Southampton), the West Midlands (Birmingham) and the North West (Liverpool, Manchester, Blackpool and Preston).

For the past five years, it has been cheaper for Brits to buy a home than to rent property in the UK, but a pandemic-led shift has changed this.

  • In March 2020, a buyer with a 10 percent deposit would save £102 per month if they bought a house instead of renting
  • In June 2021 statistics revealed that it was 7 percent cheaper for a first time buyer with the same 10 percent deposit to rent a home in the UK, rather than buy one
