More than 1,000 were in attendance for last week’s Music on the Pier in Dunkirk.

After a pandemic-enforced hiatus in 2020, Dunkirk’s Music on the Pier series is making a strong return this summer.

Except for a July 8 rainout and postponement, events have seen solid attendance. Thursday’s concert packed the pier with hundreds of people.

“We are pleased with the amount of people who have been coming,” Mayor Wilfred Rosas said. “We will continue to have the events at the pier unless it becomes unsafe. If we have more people attend, we will plan to move it to Memorial Park.”

Rosas said a related series offering music at Point Gratiot will return in 2022.

“The events at the point will continue to happen as we get more time to plan our program there,” he said. “Before the pandemic we enjoyed music at the point on Wednesday evenings and people were attending. We have not planned any this season, but will do for next season.”

Ryan Hall, festivals director for the city of Dunkirk, is not surprised by the turnout. He said people “are looking for something to do after being cooped up” for the last 16 months.

Hall said he estimated more 1,000 were in attendance Thursday.

Jill Meaux, the city’s planning and development director, noted that plans are underway for a Picnic at the Point event on Saturday, Sept. 11 and more details will get shared as they get confirmed.

The Music at the Pier events are set to continue every Thursday through Aug. 19, which is a makeup date for the July 8 rainout.
