Ballina is the subject of a welcome boost earlier this week with confirmation that Lionbridge AI on Emmett St has been acquired by TELUS International AI Data Solutions and new jobs will be created as part of the takeover.

Work is underway to upgrade and rebrand the Moy-side enterprise, which has been based in Ballina for the past 20 years, and recruitment for up to 30 new roles has also commenced.

TELUS International says it is very committed to Ballina and Mayo.

A digital customer experience (CX) innovator that designs, builds and delivers next-generation solutions for global and disruptive brands, TELUS employs over 56,000 team members worldwide and already has a major footprint in Ireland, in both Cork and Dublin.

It is one of only two globally-scaled, managed training data and data annotation services and platform providers in the world and has seen consistent growth as the artificial intelligence (AI) industry continues to proliferate.

Speaking about the jobs announcement, Enda Cunnane, senior director at TELUS International AI Data Solutions, said:“The integration of Lionbridge AI into TELUS International in January has been a huge success over the past nine months. Becoming part of TELUS International has provided great career opportunities for our team and enabled us to expand the scope and breadth of services we are able to offer our clients.

“While the name on our building might be changing, our commitment to Ballina is as strong as ever.

“Ballina has given us the base to grow to where we are today and being part of TELUS International has enhanced our potential even further, enabling us to create some new employment opportunities and contribute even more to this town and its citizens who have supported our journey to date.”

Stressing that AI is an increasingly important part of how TELUS International is supporting client needs, Mr Cunnane said the team in Ballina have been delighted to bring their expertise to such an established, innovative company and look forward to evolution as part TELUS’ global team.

“Our team members have unrivalled expertise and experience in AI and we have already seen so many new professional opportunities emerge as part of TELUS International’s global family. We have also been thrilled to adopt TELUS International’s #WeGiveWhereWeLive philosophy alongside our long history of volunteerism in Ballina, which includes the Time To Read initiative, where we support the literacy skills of pupils at Scoil Íosa.

“As part of TELUS International, we are now able to tap into new programmes and resources to help our community, like the TELUS Days of Giving #GOALLOUT initiative, wherein team members recently completed a virtual climb of Kilimanjaro to raise funds for the national Irish charities, Aware and My Lovely Horse Rescue.”
