London has already turned on its Christmas lights, with the West End decked out in the new display featuring thousands of stars.

Last week’s event was the biggest switch-on in the world – more than one million LEDs have been used.

Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Newcastle and Cardiff have also turned their lights on, meanwhile some cities like Glasgow, Cambridge, Leeds, York and Norwich have cancelled their ceremonies.

However, much of the rest of the country is still waiting to turn festive, and there will be switch-on events up and down the country.

Here are the major ones that are still going ahead.

Aberdeen

Aberdeen is switching on its Christmas tree on the evening of Thursday 18 November.

Aberdeen City Council leader, Councillor Jenny Laing, said: The Christmas in Aberdeen festivities are shaping up to be a truly magical time of year, with an outstanding events line-up returning to the city to provide some much-needed cheer and celebration during the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Belfast

Belfast is not having a switch-on ceremony. However, it is putting on two nights of Christmas-themed fun on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 November.

The theme will be “Once Upon a Time in Belfast”, and the nights will include everything from street performances to light displays.

Brighton

Brighton will switch on its Christmas light display on Thursday 18 November.

The switch-on will happen on East Street between 4.30-6.30pm, and features a brand new display designed by Brighton street artists.

The lights will cover Bond Street, Gardner Street and Kensington Gardens, as well as North Street and Western Road.

Edinburgh

Edinburgh’s display, which lights up the Royal Mile, will be switched on on Sunday 21 November – though there is no official ceremony.

The lights spread across the Mound, Rose Street, Cockburn Street, Victoria Street, West Parliament Square and City Chambers.

Oxford

Oxford will switch its lights on on Friday 19 November, with a large-scale illumination and a Victorian market on Broad Street and In Gloucester Green.

There will be further events over the weekend, Oxford Council has said, including four main festival neighbourhood hubs at Rose Hill, Cowley, Blackbird Leys, and Cutteslowe.

These events will feature creative displays and performances from Oxford-based groups. “Many buildings, parks, streets and houses will be illuminated with light creations accompanied by sound, movement and interactive play,” the council said.

Portishead

Portishead’s award-winning Christmas lights are among the best in the West Country.

Bristol does not have an official switching-on ceremony in the city centre this year, so this is a good alternative.

It takes place on Portishead High Street on Monday 29 November. There will be an accompanying firework display.

Sheffield

Sheffield have have two switch-on events this year, one at the Town Hall Square and Barker’s Pool.

They will both take place on Sunday 21 November at 5.30pm, and will be accompanied by a firework show.

Sunderland

Sunderland will turn its Christmas lights on on Thursday 18 November.

Star of Sunderland Empire’s pantomime, Su Pollard, will do the honours.

The event starts at 6pm, and includes performances from school choirs and a Salvation Army brass band.

Swansea

Swansea will switch its lights on during its Christmas parade on Sunday 21 November, starting at 5pm.

Santa and his sleigh will of course be in attendance, along with an array of pop culture characters.
