COVID-19 case numbers in Ohio have increased by nearly eight times the amount from four weeks ago as the state is going through its worst stretch in more than six months.

The state was at 194.2 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents for the period between July 29 and Wednesday, according to statistics provided Thursday by the Ohio Department of Health.

Ohio was at 27 cases per 100,000 residents four weeks ago.

Last week, it was at 125.1 cases per 100,000. Ohio was at 77.4 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 two weeks ago and at 45.8 cases three weeks ago.

The delta variant among the unvaccinated, which spreads quickly, is almost entirely to blame for the increase, said Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, ODH’s chief medical officer.

Nearly all of the COVID-19 case samples taken by the state between July 18 and 31 were the delta variant, he said Thursday.

“We’re continuing to see a troubling increase in COVID-19 cases statewide,” Vanderhoff said.

Of the state’s 88 counties, only four are below 100 cases per 100,000 residents.

Just last week, there were 28 counties below 100 cases per 100,000, including four below 50 cases per 100,000.

The latest ODH ranking by county has Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana in the bottom half.

Mahoning is at 66th with 158.3 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents. It was 52nd last week with 110.6 cases, 56th two weeks ago with 59.9 cases, 54th three weeks ago with 31.3 cases and 61st four weeks ago with 21.4 cases.

Trumbull is at 64th this week with 162.1 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents. It was at 55th last week with 105.1 cases per 100,000. It was 46th two weeks ago with 67.7 cases, 58th three weeks ago with 31.3 cases and 61st four weeks ago with 17.7 cases.

Cases in Trumbull have increased ninefold in four weeks, but it’s actually ranked lower in the state now than four weeks ago.

Columbiana is 52nd this week in the state with 172.7 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents. It was 46th last week with 116.3 cases. It was 42nd two weeks ago with 67.7 cases, 39th three weeks ago with 31.3 cases and 70th four weeks ago with 19.7 cases.

Cases in Columbiana have jumped nearly nine times what it was four weeks ago.

The ODH measures cases per 100,000 residents among counties to get a fair comparison because total cases would result in more-populous counties ranking higher.

COVID-19 DATA

The state had 3,272 new COVID-19 cases reported Thursday, a day after 3,393 were reported.

It’s the first time Ohio had back-to-back days with new cases exceeding 3,000 since Feb. 9 and 10.

Ohio has exceeded 1,000 daily COVID-19 cases during the past 10 straight days, including five that had more than 2,000 cases and the past two with more than 3,000 reported cases.

The 3,272 new COVID-19 cases reported Thursday is up from the daily average of 1,546 for the past 21 days, according to the ODH.
